Library of Things

What is a “Library of Things”?

Library of Things is a collection of objects, gadgets and kits made available for lending. The collection allows patrons to borrow special items they would only use occasionally or to test a product or technology.

The collection has grown from a single telescope purchased for the White Rock Branch in 2015. The Library now maintains a small but growing collection of these non-traditional library items. New items are added quarterly around themes like energy efficiency, home office equipment, audiovisual equipment and more. Items typically come in curated kits with carrying cases, cleaning tools, cords and adapters, detailed instructions for use and recommendations for additional resources.

How does it work?

Like all library materials, LoT items are free and only require a library card in good standing issued to an adult patron. The loan period is 1 week with the standard 3 renewals permitted. Patrons can check out 2 items from the LoT collection at a time. A waiver is signed upon check out.

How do we select items for the Library of Things?

The collection is primarily developed in collaboration with other Los Alamos County entities and community organizations to support dissemination of community wide resources through the Library. This community engagement philosophy informs selection of new materials and is ultimately a way to gather a wealth of free, innovative, and exciting offerings in one place for the benefit of the community.

Staff also consider other selection criteria including:

  • Safety
  • Durability
  • Ease of operation
  • Size
  • Ease of transportation
  • Manageable number of parts
  • Price point and potential replacement cost
  • Little to no duplication of existing community commercial rentals, and paid services.
